Standard Chartered KL Marathon Reinforces the Importance of Pre and Post-Race Care

11 Sep, 2013 (Wed)

Official coach of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2013 took an extra step to ensure that he is physically fit for the upcoming Marathon.

KUALA LUMPUR, 10th September, 2013 – Standard Chartered KL Marathon has been in collaboration with Document Based Care (DBC) Physiotherapy Centre since June to reinforce the importance of health and safety of the 33,000 runners. Documentation Based Care (DBC) is an innovation developed in Finland with over 14 years of experience in musculoskeletal system especially in athletes.

With a month to go till the Marathon, runners will have sufficient time to prepare themselves mentally and physically for the Marathon. Runners should now take the opportunity to attend a pre-race physiotherapy assessment to ensure that they are physically fit and healthy to participate in the upcoming Marathon. Following the collaboration, Mark Williams, the official coach of Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2013 attended a full and thorough assessment at the DBC Physiotherapy Centre recently.

Williams went for a consultancy session where he was asked questions about the history of his health including his habits to evaluate his fitness level. After the session, he underwent a baseline assessment done by a qualified physiotherapist. The assessment includes going through a series of workout activities that will be evaluated according to DBC’s protocol and patient’s capability. The activities are aimed to identify pain, limitation of movement, muscle strength, and over-activity of muscles. Once any physical problem has been identified by the physiotherapist, the specialist will provide a clear diagnosis to reduce the risk of any identified injury.

“I am glad that I went for the assessment as I am now aware of my physical problems. Most of the injuries come about because runners haven’t done enough body-strength work or runners over trained themselves. Runners are encouraged to undergo assessments as it helps to ensure flexibility, good upper body and lower body coordination to help avoid the risk of injuries,” said Williams, the official coach of Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2013.

This year, DBC Physiotherapy Centre will manage and provide physiotherapy services to all the runners who will be participating in the Standard Chartered KL Marathon. A total of 10 physiotherapy stations will be located at Dataran Merdeka for the runners and four stations for the elite athletes and winners of the Marathon. The Therapeutic Team will also be on site to offer services such as Kinesio Taping and PNF Technique to treat injuries or cramps. Most importantly, the DBC Physiotherapy Team will be providing advice and treatment to runners to avoid further problems that may arise after running the race. “

“Standard Chartered KL Marathon participants have been training very hard to ensure that they are fit to run and we don’t want their goals to be effected by preventable and treatable injuries. The Marathon is a major event to our running community and we hope that the pre and post-race assessments would help to reinforce the health and safety of the participants,” said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon.

The Standard Chartered KL Marathon is once again made possible by title sponsor Standard Chartered Bank in partnership with the event owner and organiser Dirigo Events, and co-organiser Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
