One year after the infamous bombing that killed 3 people and injured 260, Meb Keflezighi was the first American male runner to win the Boston Marathon since 1983.
Meb Keflezighi, nearly 39 years old, won the 118th Boston Marathon in 2:08:37.
In the women race, Rita Jeptoo from Kenya, defending champion finished the race in 2:18:57, winning for the third time and establishing a new course record.
A tribute and a great popular success
One year after the tragedy, 36,000 runners took part in the race, 9,000 runners more than usual.
Before the race start, a moment of silence was held at 8:45 a.m. to honor last year’s victims.
A huge crown, estimated at over one million people gathered along the route to cheer the participants. This is twice the usual number.
