Nelson Oyugi sets a new record at the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon

Nelson Oyugi from Kenya, was the first runner to cross the finish line at §race_link(4589) after 1:01:52.32. He was followed by Julius Koskei (1:02:16.96) and Eliud Too (1:02:34.72). Oyugi who was running in Indianapolis for the first time established a new record for the race. The previous record holder had run the race in 1:01:59.

Lilian Mariita also from Kenya won the ladies race in 1:12:03.75 before Caroline Kiptoo (1:13:31.47) and Cynthia Jerop (1:13:31.47). Mariita has already won the race in 2012.

The race is also open for wheelchair athletes. Gyudae Kim won the men’s race in 44:38.77 and Chelsea McClammer the ladies race in 51:50.97.

The weather conditions where excellent for the 25,527 runners who crossed the finish line. This huge number makes the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon the largest half marathon in the US.

The race starting in Downtown Indianapolis makes a lap around the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway before finishing by Military Park.

For the first time this year, the runners were grouped in 5 different corrals (based on runners estimated finish times) to make the run a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
