Standard Chartered KL Marathon opens registration!

Kuala Lumpur, 30 March 2009 – Ready! Set! Go! Registration for the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 is open to all runners across the world who have set their eyes on the USD100,000 total prize money allocated for the biggest and most rewarding international race to ever hit the country.

Running enthusiasts can check out more information and officially enrol in the marathon through the official website www.kl-marathon.com. Hurry and log on now to take advantage of the early bird fee by registering before April 18, 2009. Better still sign up to “Run For A Cause” to help raise money for any of the 5 charitable organizations and stand to have your registration fee waived.

“Run For A Cause” is a new initiative in Malaysia that will provide Malaysians with the opportunity to do their bit for charity whilst participating in a marathon. Runners who take part will have the option of contributing to any of five significant charities listed below:

Standard Chartered Trust Fund,
Shelter Home for Children which provides care for the young who have been abandoned, neglected, orphaned or abused,
Development of Human Resources for Rural Areas, Malaysia (DHRRA) which seeks to develop a strong rural and self-reliant community through poverty alleviation and people’s empowerment initiatives,
National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) which is dedicated to offering life-long services for people with autism and
Malaysian Nature Society which ensures that Malaysia’s natural national heritage is protected.

So how can you run and contribute? As a “Run For A Cause” runner, you can participate in the Marathon and raise funds for any of the five chosen charities. Registration fees will be waived in recognition of your commitment and efforts. The catch is — you are encouraged to raise at least RM500 by June 1 to confirm yourself as a charity runner. To help you raise these funds, you will also be able to customise an on-line donation profile to attract online pledges from just about anyone with a credit card.

To qualify for “Run For A Cause”, runners have to be Malaysian citizens aged 14 and above and be among the first 500 applicants to register between March 19 and May 20 2009. You can run in any or all of the categories except the Kid’s Dash category.

Staying true to its theme “Run Your Race”, you can select your desired category from a wide range comprising the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10KM, Fun Run (5KM), and the Kids Dash in two different age groups – 6 to 9 years old & 10 to 12 years old. Entry is free for the kids category which, is in line with the Youth and Sports Ministry’s vision of developing an active, healthy and energetic community starting with the youths.

The Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 will undoubtedly put Malaysia on the global running map as international and local runners navigate a route covering beautiful and historical landmarks around the Klang Valley.

The Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 is organised by Octagon, with Standard Chartered Bank as the Title Sponsors and MSIG Insurance Solutions as a Gold Sponsor. The marathon is endorsed by the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, and sanctioned by the Malaysia Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU), International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).
