In keeping with a long tradition of giving back to the community, the not-for-profit Portland Marathon recently gave 100 donations and grants valued at over $150,000 to other local nonprofits, service clubs, school activity groups and school athletic teams following the Event in October 2014.

The Portland Marathon is proudly produced by nearly 4,500 local volunteers. Volunteer teams have fun, work together and benefit from being involved in a great community event. The Portland Marathon’s Direct Giving Program provides an ability for those teams to earn not only experience, but also a monetary donation for volunteering.

“The impact of the donations in the community has been a great reward for the Event to be a part of, not only by assisting groups needing support, but also a catalyst for those groups which in turn pay their money forward into programs which they support.” Said Event Director, Les Smith.

The Portland Marathon has been giving back to the Community for over 35 years. Additionally, throughout the year, the Portland Marathon annually makes donations to worthy community causes such as the Portland Parks Department and the Portland Mounted Patrol among others.

National Recognized – Locally Focused

Although a nationally recognized event, the Portland Marathon is truly Portland based. Nearly all the entry fee money from the registration of over 10,000 participants stays in the Portland area. The goods, services and supplies procured as rewards for the participants, such as finisher shirts, trophies, running bibs, roses, printed materials, food and beverages are all purchased locally. Likewise, all the materials used for the physical production of the Event during Marathon weekend are purchased or rented locally.

Economic Impact

As a destination event, the Portland Marathon attracts runners and walkers from all 50 States and over 25 countries who enjoy our many local attractions, great shopping and fine restaurants. By those staying in hotels, more than $250,000, is generated in hotel tax which goes to the City and County as funding. Based on a report by the Portland State School of Business, the Portland Marathon has been measured to have an annual estimated economic impact to the Portland area of over $15 Million dollars, which is a conservative estimate.

Looking Ahead to 2015
