This morning, before the official prize-giving ceremony, the closing press conference took place. Simone Brogioni, who co-ordinated the event along with Cristina Murgia, thanked all the volunteers, a total of 400 people that made the event run smoothly even when conditions became critical due to the rain. “This morning we have received several messages of thanks and praise for the success of the event. This success is due to the constant work of hundreds of volunteers who dedicated their time to thousands of athletes. In particular, I wish to thank Soccorso Alpino and the Guardia di Finanza in Val Travenanzes that during the violent rainfall Friday managed to build a temporary footbridge for athletes to cross the flooding river”.
“In relation to statistics – Brogioni continued – Cortina Skyrace held on Thursday evening had 350 registrations, 308 starters and 272 finishers, which means 88% of runners finished the race. For the Cortina Trail on Saturday morning 1,500 runners registered, 1339 started and 1228 finished which menas that 92% of athletes reached the finishing line. In The North Face Lavaredo Ultra Trail 1,500 runners registered, 1,438 started and 975 finished the race. This means that 68% of athletes reached the finishing line. These percentages are in line with the numbers in previous editions. In terms of participants, the best trail runners in the world and in Italy competed. We are particularly proud of the international dimension of the race as both the first five men and the first five women to finish all have different nationalities. Overall, more than 60 countries had participating athletes.”
After Simone Brogioni, the mayor of Cortina, Andrea Franceschi spoke: «Compared to other events The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail is magical – the mayor explained: The atmosphere you breath in the moments before the beginning of a race is extraordinary and running in our Dolomite mountains at night, at dawn or when the sun’s rays colour the mountains all make this event unique”.
“I preferred the second part of the trail – Uxue Fraile Azpeitia, who came second, explained – the first part of the trail is beautiful but also easy to run along and therefore because of my particular athletic characteristics, I didn’t run there as well as I did in the second half which suited me more as it was more technical and difficult”. Spanish runner Javier Dominguez shared this opinion: “I also prefer more technical trails – he explained – Running in the Dolomite mountains was incredible, I thought I was running in heaven. I have always loved these mountains, but yesterday, maybe because I was in better form to enjoy the landscape in which I was running, I loved them even more.”
The winner Andy Symonds, who also set a new record, is enthusiastic about his performance: “It was really incredible running on the Lavaredo Ultra Trail. A dream. It is difficult to imagine running at night, I had tried to sleep during the day but I only managed to fall asleep an hour before the start of the race and so I started out a little hesitant. Once I started running I began to feel good immediately. There were some difficulties along a part of trail full of mud, but it was the mud that reminded me of the trails where I train at home because they are quite similar which helped me to be even sharper in my performance”.
After the concluding comments in which participants were invited to the official prize-giving ceremony, the organisers closed the eleventh edition.
