There are very few places in the world where you can run a marathon and go on a safari – at the same time! However, South Africa is one such place and the The Red Cross Big Five Marathon is the marathon that might allow you to get a peek at lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, Cape buffalos and perhaps even a leopard! It is often cited as one of the marathons most worth travelling for.
Another spectacular – and spectacularly challenging – marathon is the Sani Stagger Marathon at the Sani Pass. One gathers that a marathon featuring a mountain pass is likely to take its toll… But what a view of the Drakensburg!
The Otter African Trail Run allows runners to take in the incredibly scenic Otter hiking trail – a trail that is off limits to runners at all other times. No need to leave the beaten track, though… the Nestle Bar One Buffalo Marathon stays on the pavement but also takes runners through some very picturesque countryside as they head from Stutterheim to East London.
Finally, there is the Langebaan Country Estate Weskus Marathon which represents, according to its organizers, “an unforgettable run in the park”. The park in question is, of course, the beautiful West Coast National Park in Langebaan.
Now, running in South Africa does not necessarily mean wild animals, hiking trails, national parks and breathtaking scenery. The country has its share of city marathons as well.
