FIRST Marathon of Iran
On Saturday 9th of April 2016 Iran Silk Road organized the first marathon of Iran.
The “I run Iran” marathon started near the city of Shiraz with a finish at Naqshe Rostam near Persepolis, the legendary capital of the Persian Empire. Runners from over 30 different countries have participated in this unique, international event. During the “I run Iran” event runners and supporters got acquainted with the Persian culture and history. This official Iran marathon is endorsed by local Iranian authorities, the Iranian Athletic Federation and the Iran Tourism Organization.
NO marathon without Persians
All marathon runners gathered near the impressive Shiraz city gate for a transfer to the nearby start. The marathon passed by at the Gate of All Nations of Persepolis and finished at Naqshe Rostam. Participants were awarded their medal near the impressive rock cut tomb of Darius the Great. This great Persian king of kings decreed 2500 years ago to embark on an expedition to conquer Athens. In modern times the marathon has become the symbol of international peace and friendship.

This international sport event offers a unique chance to discover the real Iran. Shiraz is the city of poets, splendid Persian gardens, the nightingale and the Shiraz wine grape. For the first time in history Iran opened its Persian gates to marathon runners.
