Interview: Marathon Touraine Loire Valley

13 Mar, 2015 (Fri)

Credit : MARATHON TOURAINE LOIRE VALLEY – Comité d’Organisation du Marathon TLV/10 et 20KM Hello, you are organizing the Touraine Loire Valley Marathon on September 20, 2015. Can you tell us where it takes place? The Touraine Loire Valley Marathon will take place in Tours, in the Indre-et-Loire department. Tours is a city ideally located in the heart of France, a little more than 200 km from Paris, in the Loire Valley, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for its numerous chateaus. The race was begun very recently. It was created last year. What were your motivations for organizing it? The Touraine Loire Valley Marathon project was born from the fact that Tours was already the regional capital of road races in the Grand Ouest, with both the Tours 10 km and 20 km races. One day or another the city had to, along with the daily regional Nouvelle République, organize a marathon involving the economic and tourist actors of the Indre-et-Loire Department. §staticmap(19419,5,800,400) The most iconic marathons are found within 300 km of Tours and we were in a position to offer an exceptional course at the heart of an exceptional event! What type of course can the runners expect? Can you describe it? It seems to me that this race will be a little different from last year’s. The Touraine Loire Valley Marathon course is not difficult, and it’s ideal for getting a good time. The first 5 km of the course are urban, in downtown Tours. Then the runners will follow the flat and bucolic “Loire à Vélo” route, next to the water, and will go along the Cher River until Savonnières. Next, they will reach the marathon’s halfway point at the Chateau de Villandry and its French Gardens. Finally, they will return to the banks of the Loire, a “Royal River” par excellence, go through Berthenay, then Saint-Genouph and La Riche . . . for a magical arrival in Tours on the Place Anatole-France. This course is also accessible to Handisport marathoners. We have made some changes to improve the comfort of our runners. On the way out of Tours, in order to offer runners more space, we will use the D7 route to Savonnière to return to the banks of the Cher around the 8th km. The goal is to avoid a route that is too narrow, since the runners are already very close together. The second change takes place at the Chateau de Villandry, where the four bends on the gravel in the gardens and the crossing between the runners make for a difficult stretch. The runners will enter through a porch of the chateau and exit through another with a narrower path in the gardens. Finally, to “break” the long straight line (the 12 final km) on the way back, the Committee has decided to add two detours on the plain, resuming at Berthenay, then Saint-Genouph, with a crossing at La Riche. That way, we hope to break the monotony and offer a more dynamic course. We have been listening to runners’ comments and we have tried to meet their expectations with these small modifications. Credit : MARATHON TOURAINE LOIRE VALLEY – Comité d’Organisation du Marathon TLV/10 et 20KM From its first edition, the marathon has ranked among the top 5 most popular French marathons. How many runners are you expecting this year? What type of runner do you think you will attract? The Organizing Committee is very happy and proud to have made it into the TOP 5 French Marathons in its first year of existence. We extend our thanks to all of the runners who believed in us. Now it’s up to us to “score a try” and attract even more runners for the second edition. We fervently hope to attract just as many runners, if not more! We have nevertheless limited registration to 5,000 numbers in order to offer the best quality reception to all the runners. We invite all lovers of running, whatever their level, to come participate in this sporting event. From elite to recreational runners, we hope that this marathon will bring together the greatest number in good sportsmanship and respect for the environment. We expect people from all over France, as well as runners from other countries, who can also take advantage of the weekend to discover the Loire Valley region and its heritage. Have you planned other races during the weekend, what distances? The 33rd edition of the Tours 10 km and 20 km races will be at the same place on the same day; there is also a kid’s race. On Sunday September 20, runners will have a choice between the 10 km (Start 10:00am), the 20 km (Start 10:50am) and the marathon (Start 9:00am). The Tours 10 km and 20 km are the unmissable road race events in the Grand Ouest! This event is 2nd at the box office after the Paris 20 km. At this time of year, what are the anticipated weather conditions? The weather conditions are very favorable at this time of year; the sky is often clear or partly cloudy. The climate is mild, it isn’t too cold or too hot, and temperatures range between 20 and 25° C. Credit : MARATHON TOURAINE LOIRE VALLEY – Comité d’Organisation du Marathon TLV/10 et 20KM Have you planned any special festivities around the race? Numerous activities are planned for the day of the marathon. Starting on Saturday, we will be there to welcome the marathoners during the packet pickup. They can discover the village of partners and equipment companies for numerous exchanges around the race route. On Sunday, the course will be enlivened by the presence of 20 musical groups! There will be numerous meeting points to come and encourage the marathoners: at the Start/Finish in Tours, at the 10th km in Moulin de Ballan Miré, at the 15th km in Savonnières, at the 20th km in Chateau de Villandry, the 30th km in Berthenay, the 35th Km in Saint-Genouph and at the 40th km at La Riche. The marathoners will pass through 7 celebrating villages, with a big event planned for the public in Saint Genouph, where everyone can bring a picnic and share a festive time together before the runners pass by. Don’t forget the Paella Party offered to each marathoner after the race, which they can enjoy at the Guiguette in a festive atmosphere on the banks of the Loire. Costumes will also be a part of the party, with a bottle of Loire wine for each competitor dressed up for the occasion. After having run the marathon, what would you recommend to a runner who has never been to Tours? A good restaurant, or sight seeing tour you don’t want to miss? After having completed the marathon, runners are invited to take part in a Paella Party on the banks of the Loire. What’s more, the European Heritage Days are also taking place during the weekend of September 20, 2015. Marathoners can also discover numerous museums and monuments for free: The Museum of Fine Arts, the Compagnonnage Museum, the Chateau de Luynes, the Chateau d’Amboise, the Chateau de Villandry, the Petrifying Caves in Savonnières . . . It’s also a great time to visit the wine cellars and enjoy the wines of the Loire Valley (In moderation, of course . . .) Credit : MARATHON TOURAINE LOIRE VALLEY – Comité d’Organisation du Marathon TLV/10 et 20KM In one sentence, what would you say to the readers of ahotu Marathons to make them want to register in the Touraine Loire Valley Marathon? “We offer marathoners an exceptional race at the heart of an exceptional event! " Indeed, they can explore the banks of the Cher and the Loire, walk through the gardens of the Chateau de Villandry . . . and enjoy a festive and friendly atmosphere! With the Tours 10 km and 20 km, there are around 20,000 runners present to share the values of the sport and face a challenge according to their level, fitness and personal goals. Equipment for the runners is also exceptional, especially thanks to our partnership with the equipment company Asics. The Organizing Committee has had two keywords, “security” and “friendliness,” for 33 years! We are making every effort to protect the runners, with several medical teams present and after race care. Interview with Marie Gérard, Marathon Touraine Loire Valley Organization committee.
