Did the inaugural Standard Chartered Marathon (Full) held on 28th Jun 2009 in Kuala Lumpur. I am only an average runner completing in 4:30hrs. I have done the Standard Chartered Singapore and Hong Kong (Full) Marathons and I would like to say this was by far the worst organised marathon I have ran. The first 10kms was prety uneventful but as the sun rises and traffic 'wakes up', it started to get a bit choatic with the traffic. Most of the major junctions were controlled by the traffic police but on smaller junctions, it's every runner for themselves. Motorbikes were weaving in between runners trying to get to onto to the vehicle lanes, cars were also tryng to squeeze between runners to get across lanes that were closed off for runners. The route was also hazardous as it criss-crosses from one side of the road to the other on many of the major roads and highways. I have to run along side a car and a bus, although only a short distance, to get from one side of the road to the other! Signage on the route were also not that clear and at some point, there were no marshals on site to give directions. There was a point on the route where the half and full marathon runners were running together. There was an intersection where the full marathon runners were to carry on running straight and the half marathon runners were to take a left turn. The sign was a bit vague but I just happened to notice it. Just a short whle later, an African runner was running like he had the dogs behind him. My thought then was that if he was a full marathon runner, he was starting to take up the pace a bit late. But it also occured to me that he may be doing the half marathon and just lost his direction. True enough, just another 2km on, I see this runners walking back in the opposite direction and he had the half marathon bib on him! There wasn't any marshals at the turning point that I noticed. If he was the lead runner in the half marathon, as I suspect he might have been, that is one sorry way to lose your prize money. Water stations were stationed as stated in the programme but come the 30km mark, there were water staion but there was no water!!! They have ran out! For slow runners (like me), that was a huge disappointment. From the 30km to the end, there was only one water station that had some water. The rest of the stations, the volunteers manning it were just sitting around chatting. Guess there were not much they could do. As for the power gel, there was only one staion hidden round a corner somewhere in Chinatown area. As for bananas that were mentoned in the programme, all I saw were some skins and not a lot of it at that! As for the route, it brings you in and out of the inner parts of Kuala Lumpur. The first 20-odd km were the usual up and downs and some relative flat running. However, from the 30-39km mark, it was a roller coaster of a run on a highway back towards the city area. It was a bit of a struggle (and bear in mind there was the point where the water ran out) running up rather steep and long slopes and even down (when your legs are tired) but the last 3km to the finish line was relatively flat. Even at the end, there were no signs (that I could see) that tells you where to go for water or to collect your medal. At least I spotted the water station where most of the runners were milling around but had to ask others as to where to collect the finishers' medal, which was at the other end of the field. Overall, a little difficult run due to the terrain and heat and lack of energy supplements (drinks, etc) toward the end. Being the first time Standard Chartered is organising the marathon in Kuala Lumpur, I will give them the benefit of doubt and hope they can improve at least 3 folds next year. Would I run it again? If there was something better around the same time, probably not. If nothing else, at least it close to home, but will have to train harder.

The inaugural Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 on 28 June 2009 is set to place Malaysia on the global map of marathons by being a sustainable event. Following in the footsteps of eight successful Standard Chartered Marathons spanning four continents, the Race offers the biggest prize money ever for a marathon in Malaysia (RM 350,000) with a guaranteed prize pool for Malaysian runners. Registration will begin simultaneously with the website launch sometime in early March. Be sure to bookmark the official website http://www.kl-marathon.com/

The most current date that I've heard is that it'll be held on 28 June. I understand this is due to a change in the main sponsor for the event. Suggest you hold off making your travel plans until there's a formal announcement.

Hi all. Time of this marathon seems to be a mystery, in deed. I would like to go on 2009 edition, but in AIMS they tell late February, whereas here it is late March. If anybody has more info or onfo on, where to get it, I appreciate all the help. (I almost booked and paid the flight tickets already..) Roni, Finland
