The marathon takes you to Vienna's most impressive modern and historic sights. It begins between the skyscrapers of the UNO complex, the site of the United Nations, crosses the 864 metre long Imperial Bridge (Reichsbrücke) over the River Danube. The race takes you past the Riesenrad or giant ferris wheel, through the green expanse of Prater Park. It then continues on Vienna's Ring Road, past the famous Opera House, through Vienna's River Valley to reach Schönbrunn Castle, the former imperial summer residence. On the way back runners can take in the greatest examples of Vienna's architecture along the Ring Road, from the numerous museums and the Town Hall to the Burg Theatre and the University.

Course highlights

The Vienna City Marathon leads to the most impressive modern and historical sights of Vienna. You start on Wagramer Straße in modern Vienna, close to the "UNO-City", the seat of the United Nations, and finishes in the city centre in front of the Burgtheater. Immediately after the start, the participants cross the river Danube on the 864-meter Reichsbrücke bridge towards the city center. You pass the huge Ferris wheel and run on the completely flat "Prater Hauptallee" (main avenue) through the large, green park area of the Prater. This is exactly where Eliud Kipchoge ran in 1:59:40.2 hours for the marathon distance on 12 October 2019. He became the first person to run a marathon under two hours. A quarter of the VCM course is on Kipchoge's 1:59 course. The race continues along the Danube Canal to the Vienna Ringstrasse, past the Vienna State Opera, the arts center Secession and the Naschmarkt, through the Wiental Valley to Schönbrunn Palace, Austria's most visited tourist attraction. Still before the half marathon distance, you run through Vienna's most famous shopping street, Mariahilfer Straße. You see many of the most impressive museums, the Parliament, the University of Vienna and the "Votivkirche" while running along one of the most impressive cultural marathon routes in the world. The magnificent Ringstraße boulevard is your home stretch. You will reach the finish line directly in front of the Burgtheater with a view of the City Hall. The finishing line in front of the Burgtheater is also the heart of all running events on Saturday.

Of all the marathons I have done it was the worst organized. There were very long lines at the number drop-off. In order to make a fast route they had long stretches back and forth inside the Prater park that are rather boring, and several times I wondered if I hadn't already passed through there and taken a wrong turn. It would be nicer to sacrifice the speed a little in favor of the sights of Vienna. The most amazing thing was that none of the stands at the finish line accepted credit cards as if it was normal to run a marathon with pockets full of change to have a beer afterwards.

the city is beautiful but the marathon has wide room for improvement

Vienna city marathon was poor organizathon.i have run warcaw, valencia and athens marathon and vienna was unfortunately the worst. the two small problems were :1) big queues in expo,i went early in saturday and i was waiting ine hour , my friends went later and the queue was worse. 2)not accurate gps (but if you keep time , it's ok) The biggest problem was hydration.Marathon and half marathon ran togethes so there were many poeple to hydration station so in many cases you couldn't take cup of water. You must stop , take the cup and run again. This problem was at fisrt 20km.The majority of athetes in my pace (4:16 per km) had problem with the water and many of them in the end of marathon have muscle crambs. The slower runners propably had bigger problem and they coundn't take water. If marathon started at 08:00 and half at 09:00 it will be better but now i am very sad because any athlete has spent time and money and he has trainned months so it is disrespectful that bad hydration. I had goal sub 3 hours and i reached my goal (2:59:55).I tell that because i am not disappointed for my time i think my review is impartial.

Pros: - Great atmosphere among the spectators. - Nice race-expo Cons: - Mediocre course compared to such a beautiful city - Expensive compared to others in the region - No pacers - Terrible mobile website and constant nagging about downloading their app - Disorganized, poorly marked and crowded finish-area - Not nearly enough restrooms at the starting-area - Bib pick-up/Expo, start and finish in 3 different places. And no same-day pick-up. - Too few bins at refreshment-stations so everyone ran around in trash Overall a hype.

What an experience from start to finish. The sights, the sounds and the course (flat). That finish at Rathausplatz is a memory that will last my lifetime, thank you VCM!

Takes in where the GOAT ran his 2 hour marathon. Unique in its surroundings.

Well organized. A little bit crowded, but it is only due to its popularity (what is a good indicator :-))
