The Schwarzwald-Marathon (Black Forest Marathon) is one of the oldest marathons in Germany. In 1968 it was the first marathon worldwide to also allow women to compete. The run is taking place in the pretty little town of Braeunlingen in the south of the Black Forest. A granite monument in the town commemorates the finishers. The about 500 starters come not only from Germany, but also from nearby Switzerland and France among other countries, showing the international reputation of this race. 80 % of the course is on non-paved forest tracks. There are relatively many spectators around. The race is an ‘old style’ marathon, which is not too much commercialized on a beautiful but difficult course. This is an honest, do-it-on-your-own marathon with few spectators for encouragement and more than enough ascents (and descents) for anyone. Good organization.
