    This is a smallish (800-900 runners) out-and-back marathon, and it follows a lovely course through the Regensburg old town, along the Danube and through some charming smaller towns, before returning. It is well-organized, it has great support services and the locals come out in force throughout the route to cheer the runners on. There are plenty of musical groups along the route as well and the overall effect is that it feels like a bigger marathon than it really is.

    The course itself is quite flat and quite fast and the cobblestone running in the old town is minimal and manageable. The only memorable elevation gain I can recall was the run over the medieval stone bridge that spans the Danube and that was almost nothing (10-15 feet, maybe).

    The marathon uses the ChampionChip and the bibs actually contain each runner’s first name on them, which the support personnel and spectators frequently use while cheering on the runners (nice personal touch, I thought).

    The only potential drawback is that the half marathon runs the same course, starting 1:40:00 after the marathon start and the marathon runners need to fight their way through the throngs of half marathoners late in the run to keep on target. Not a major deal, but it was noticeable.

    The finish area had a small grandstand and the support and refreshments there were plentiful.

    This year (2009), the weather was almost perfect, with overcast and rain before the run, turning into simple overcast during the first half, although the sun came out and it got increasingly warm during the second half and for the rest of the day.

    Maybe not a marathon that one would seek out from far and wide, but I think you will be quite pleased if you are in the area and choose to run in it.
