About the event

COVID19 Protocols

For 2021, the following risk-mitigation protocols will be in place for all Oregon Outside events regardless of progress in vaccine delivery:

1. All participants are being issued medical-grade masks. Masks must be worn at all times before
and after the event, and must be worn at aid stations.
2. Aid station volunteers are being equipped with heavy duty rubber gloves, cleaning buckets,
sanitation rags. Drink stations and surfaces are to be wiped down often, and after any number
of runners leaves the station.
3. Spectators are forbidden.
4. Starting areas are spaced in a 10x10’ grid to keep runners away from each other.
5. A pre-race screening survey will be conducted 5 days prior to each event. To encourage
compliance, any participant having to withdraw for suspected COVID-related reasons will be
granted a full value deferral to future events.
6. We'll be setting up packet pickup on race morning. All packets are stuffed by hospital-grade clean techniques to prevent contamination.
7. Upon arrival each participant is screened for COVID symptoms. If you fail the screening (display symptoms) you'll be dismissed from the event, but you WILL receive a deferral or credit to another Oregon Outside event.
8. If needed we will flex down our registration capacities to comply with local and state gathering limits.

Overview

The Broken/Vista Trail Half & Marathon is a new race for 2021 from Oregon Outside. The stunningly beautiful course winds through the Deschutes National Forest from the village of Skyliners just outside Bend, OR.

With views of the Oregon Cascades this pine-studded route will challenge you with 1700 ft of gain in the half marathon and 3100 ft of gain in the full marathon. Broken/Vista is certified, sanctioned, and conducted with the highest standards for quality. A portion of the proceeds from this event is donated to the Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA) who build and maintain the awesome trail systems here in Bend. https://www.cotamtb.com/

Course

The course is entirely off-road and primarily consists of beautiful single-track with medium technical difficulty. The remainder of the course is fire road. Both distances are a single-loop design starting and finishing from the Skyliners Sno Park. You'll get some awesome views of Broken Top and Mt Bachelor!

The half marathon is a manageable run for beginners, but offers balanced climbs and screaming downhills for experienced trail runners.

The full marathon ventures further west of the Swede Ridge and loops towards Vista Butte in towering pines characteristic of the PNW. But there's a twist - in most years you'll encounter snow pack :D Will it be hard? Yes. Will it kick your butt? Probably. Will it be EPIC? Oh heck yes! Your reward for powering through the challenges is a long, mostly downhill stretch to the finish through rolling singletrack. Poles are permitted in the full marathon. We're still working out the cutoffs and drop-bag opportunities.

Registration

Registration is expected to open January 29, 2021 and remain open until Tuesday, June 1.

The half marathon will be $65 thru Feb 28th, and $85 after. The full marathon will be $100 thru Feb 28th, and $125 after.

Volunteer

Anyone good enough to volunteer with us will receive an event shirt as well as big discounts on future events. Want a free entry to next year's Broken/Vista? Well here you go.

We'll need help with aid stations and sweepers. Please see details by clicking the green "Volunteer" button above.

Swag and Awards

All registered participants will receive an awesome event shirt. Shirts are gender fitted (order a size based on your normal fit, we'll adjust for the shirt maker). Please register before May 4th to guarantee a proper fit.

Finisher awards to all half and full finishers. Age group awards as follows: The winner of each age group will receive a special award for both female and male, in 10 year divisions. 19-under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+ for each race distance.

Accomodations

This event is vegetarian friendly, and we will try to provide vegan friendly options. We will offer two fully-stocked aid stations in the half-marathon. The full marathon will feature four fully-stocked aid opportunities.

Post race drinks including beer will be available but no post-race food for 2021 as we continue to observe responsible COVID protocols. To access the beer/ciders you will need to verify your age with a photo ID when you pick up your packet.

This event is sponsored by Honey Stinger and Tailwind. Their products are proudly offered at the aid stations. Chip-timing is provided by RunningLane.

Packet Pickup

Packets will be delivered on race morning as you arrive at the Skyliners Sno Park. All packets will be stuffed using hospital-grade clean techniques.

Elite Entries

Elite entries are available. Please email the RD before registering ([email protected]). Qualification standards apply.

Weather

Dawn is at 4:47am with dusk at 9:20pm (sunrise 5:23am and sunset 8:44pm). Weather in Central Oregon in early June is normally dry, sunny, and excellent for ultra running. Cool mornings and evenings, and very predictable. Expect highs around 70 and lows around 40. However because the course ranges between 4700ft and 6300ft you should expect a chance of cold and/or precipitation. The event is highly unlikely to be affected by weather.

If a weather system does roll in, weather breaks over the mountains at the west end of the course. Be prepared for wind but it's not a particular concern thanks to mountain and tree cover along the course.

The RD reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule the event if weather threatens the safety of runners or volunteers, or if the trails may be significantly damaged by weather + foot traffic. All reasonable efforts will be made to avoid this scenario, but in the VERY unlikely event of a cancellation, deferrals and partial refunds will be arranged.
