About the event

18th Annual Safe Passage 5K - Virtual Event

2022 marks our 18th Annual Safe Passage 5K, raising funds to support our school in Guatemala. The race will be held virtually again from                          September 9th-18th, 2022. The last two year's virtual events, have seen our most successful races ever, raising well over our targeted goal each year. Join us again in bringing hope, education, and opportunity to our students.

Check out some highlights from our 2021 and 2020 Virtual Events!

Our 2022 Fundraising Goal: $30,000

The realities of the pandemic hit our community hard. The Guatemalan Ministry of Education closed all schools (for in-person learning) across the country in March 2020. After nearly 2 years of remote learning, we were finally able to welcome our students back to campus in late January 2022 on a part-time, hybrid-learning basis (with many new restrictions, protocols and social distancing procedures in place).

This year, money raised through our Virtual 5K will go towards addressing the academic, social and emotional deficits created by the school closure and inability to see our students face-to-face during the pandemic. Your support will help provide necessary resources to address challenges around nutritional needs, the hiring of additional teachers and another psychologist to support our students, more training in trauma informed practices for staff, and so many other important necessities.

What is Safe Passage?

Safe Passage, founded in 1999 by Yarmouth, ME native, Hanley Denning (an alum of Greely High School and Bowdoin College), is a K-9th grade school providing comprehensive education, health, and enrichment programs to over 500 students and 300 families living in extreme poverty in the community surrounding the Guatemala City garbage dump.

Registration Fees: Adults:  $25 Students: $12Families: $65 for family of four, plus $12 per additional student   T-shirts:

We are happy to announce that everyone within the U.S, Guatemala and Germany will again receive a free t-shirt this year. Unfortunately, folks outside these areas may be asked to cover the cost of shipping (due to high shipping rates).

If you register by August 1st, we will try our very best to ship your tee in time for you to have it before the event.

Every registration requires a home address and a t-shirt size. We will either hand deliver t-shirts to local participants or ship to those runners who live outside of the area. Registrants after August 1st may receive t-shirts after the event is complete (depending on date of registration and supply of shirt sizes).

*Tees are available in Men's, Women's and Youth sizes. Please note we are all out of Women's XL sizes*

A gift of $25 is the equivalent of a student's classroom supplies for over a week (IE. worksheets, pencils, crayons, etc).

A gift of $75 covers the cost of food and preparation for 25 student's meals for a day on campus.
