The Feet for the Street 5K, was created to raise awareness and much needed financial support for the Winston-Salem Street School, a private, nonprofit alternative educational option for at-risk high school students in the Forsyth County area. The Street School combines small class sizes, caring, individualized attention, and an unwavering belief that the students we serve, when given a second chance, can not only thrive in high school, but be better prepared for success in life as well.
In the last 16 years, 236 students have overcome personal issues and learning difficulties to graduate and receive an accredited high school diploma from the Street School. These are students who many had little hope for and who in most cases, had very limited expectations for themselves before coming to the Street School. Since the Street School is a nonprofit organization, your support directly impacts our ability to provide life-changing services for our students. By participating in events like the Feet for the Street 5K, you are making a difference!
New for 2021, participants will have the option to run virtually! Registration works the same as the live run, only you run YOUR race on YOUR course! Registration includes sponsor giveaways, the ability to post your time on our web site, a t-shirt, a finisher medal, and of course the ability to support the important work of the Winston-Salem Street School.
HOW VIRTUAL RACES WORK
1) Register and invite your friends.
2) Pick out your race course and run your race anytime between April 26 and May 1.
3) Time yourself using your mobile device, running watch, or any other type of clock.
4) Upload your results to the race site — further instructions will be sent during race week.
5) Take a selfie and share it with your friends (optional of course).
Feet for the Street 5K and 1 mile Fun Run description (and COVID-19 safety measures):
The Feet for the Street course starts and finishes on the Salem Lake trail, directly beside the playground, parking lot and restroom facilities at the main entrance to the lake. This makes for a wonderful venue for all who participate and attend. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, race officials will utilize a staggered start to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Participants will be divided into start waves of no more than the allowable number of people per NC and local regulations on the day of the race. Race wave logistics will be designed to facilitate social distancing before and during the race start. Several other precautions will be put into place in response to COVID-19 so that we are compliant or better than government regulations and following the best advice of public health experts. All attendees will be asked to wear a mask, including race participants, who can remove them when their event starts. Also, opportunities for gathering, such as a race results area and vendor tents, will not be part of this year’s event. Custom designed finisher medals will be available for all participants at the finish line. Awards for the top three male and female 5K overall winners will be mailed and all 5K male and female age group winners will receive their awards via mail as well. Award categories:
Top 3 Overall Winners – Male and Female
First Place in each Age Group – Male and Female
Age Groups: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80 and over
Make sure to look for and congratulate members of the Winston-Salem Street School Running Club, many of whom will be taking part in their first ever 5K race.
The 1 mile Fun Run starts at 8:30 am. All Fun Run participants will receive finisher medals.
To help with COVID-19 gathering restrictions, packet pick-up will take place both Friday afternoon (4/30/21), from 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm, at the Winston-Salem Street School (630 West 6th Street, W-S, NC 27101), and race day morning at the check-in area, near the Salem Lake playground area. This will take place from 7:30 am – 8:30 am, with the 1 mile fun run beginning at 8:30 am and the 5K race at 9:00 am.
Race registration for the 1 mile fun run and 5K will close at midnight, Thursday night.
