What is it?
The Fully Involved 5K is a run/walk that will be held on December 8th at 10:00 Am. The race is being created by Senior Alex Kreh at Madison County High School in cooperation with Madison County Parks and Recreation. At the event, there will be a fire safety information booth where smoke alarms will be distributed and kids can be taught fire safety by volunteers from the Madison County Fire Department. Runners can purchase “First On-Scene” tickets online for 20$ and will get a T-shirt from the event. After November 30th, these tickets will no longer be available, however, tickets can be purchased at the event, 20$ for adults and 10$ for kids. Several firefighters from several departments will participate in a friendly competition where the firefighters will run in full turnout gear and the team to have the lowest combined time will win the money received from the boot drive that will be held at the event.
All proceeds from the event will go towards the “Flourish Boutique” at the Emily Couric Cancer Center within the UVA Health System. This organization provides wigs and care packages and other necessities to families that are affected by cancer and may not be able to afford these things. Many people are affected by cancer in some way in their lifetime, in fact, 68% of firefighters are affected by cancer. Some are affected during their career and some are affected after retirement from the exposure to carcinogenic material they are around daily. One of the most deadly events in United States history still kills people today as firefighters from that day are seeing the effects of the smoke and ash they inhaled. Today, more preventative measures are being put in place to keep firefighters safer than ever before and help reduce the risk of illness on the job.
If you would like to support the cause but are not able to or do not want to participate in the race you can make a donation online, or you can be a spectator at the race and donate to the boot drive that will be handed out to one of the departments at the end of the race.
