About the event

HEADWATERS 30K

We are back post COVID.
I hope everyone stayed safe and healthy last year. If you lost someone close to you during the pandemic our thoughts go to you.

Some things change and some things never change.
We are keeping the 2021 course as it was in 2019, but we are running it counter clockwise. This means no soul sucking climb out of the valley at the end. It does mean you will get the creek crossings earlier. You will also get 2,100+ feet of gain in the 18 miles with a max elevation of 4,400+ feet.

With that being said here are the important details.
This race is low key and tons of fun. We keep the runner field small so we can all get to know each other and have a blast. Car pooling is strongly encouraged for this race as it helps with the camaraderie and it lessens the impact this race could have on Panthertown Valley. Of course in the age of COVID 19 please be mindful of your safety and the safety of others. Safety is my number one priority and if we are not in a much safer place with COVID we will postpone this race until things are safer.

Things to know:

This race is hosted in Panthertown Valley. The start is at the Salt Rock Gap parking area. There are two aid stations. The first is roughly 5 miles in at the Cold Mountain parking area. The second is about 14 miles in at Rattlesnake Knob trail head. Both aid stations will have typical aid station food (bananas, PB&J, Salty, and chocolate). The finish will have hot soup and bread per usual. We are constantly looking to improve and add new and fun things to this race and aid station food is one area we will always work on. So as we get closer to the race we may have delicious additions. We encourage cupless races. It is advisable to bring your own hydration containment system with you. We cannot guarantee there will be cups at the aid stations. We will have bowls and cups at the finish for the soup.
The course is fairly runnable. There are at least two big climbs you will have to navigate and then some minor climbs, but for the most part you can run this course. The course is mostly single track with a few spots that you are on old forest access roads.
I will run the course a few times throughout the year, because I love Panthertown Valley. I will post the dates of those runs on the Headwaters Trail Race Facebook page and group. Also, on the Plott Balsam Runners Facebook page and group. Anyone is welcome to join me.

Race Swag:
Each runner will get a gloves and socks this year and my wife has agreed to make a mug for every runner. What will be cool about this years mugs is that each one will be unique no two will be alike.
Top 3 female and male prizes yet to be determined.
