Laurens District 55 High School Cross Country is proud to host the 2nd annual Laurens United 5K. The purpose of this race is to raise awareness and funds for Laurens United and the Raiders United Mental Health Scholarship. Raiders United Mental Health Scholarship
Background: After the tragic passing of LDHS alumni, Orin Patterson, current student council members and alumni decided that something had to be done to raise awareness for suicide prevention and mental health. Since 2016, we have lost students who were a part of the Laurens District 55 community to suicide. We have also noticed the increasing number of students battling mental health issues across the district. LDHS Robotics team approached student council about working together to increase awareness of these issues under the theme of “Raiders Un;ted” because they saw the same need in the community. Orin was passionate about helping others. He was always willing to lend an ear or hand to others in need. Because he listened to others, we want to make sure that those who need help have someone that will listen to them.
Purpose: The Raiders Un;ted committee decided to start this scholarship to aid a graduating senior who plans to major in psychology, counseling, or other related mental health fields. It is our hope that the recipient of the scholarship will work to become an individual that a struggling person could confide in and receive help from.
