The United States is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic. Opioids including prescription drugs and heroin are the leading cause of accidental deaths in this country. Drugs now kill more people than car accidents and guns. Every overdose is someones child and overdoses are preventable!
Madison “Maddie” Marini died of an accidental overdose on December 29th, 2016 at the young age of 22. Maddie had a vibrant, larger than life personality and a contagious laugh and smile. She had dreams and hopes of attending college and becoming a forensic anthropologist. Maddie struggled with addiction for many years. Limited resources, limited opportunities and financial obstacles made her road to recovery not possible. Maddie is loved and greatly missed by so many!
Proceeds from the Maddie’s Miles 5k will go to support Phoenix Rising of Winston Salem, Inc, a non-profit group whose mission is to battle addiction by supporting local drug courts;funding treatment; and launching awareness campaigns so that no more lives will be lost to addiction and accidental overdose deaths
