KC Mothers in Charge - Who We Are

Join KC Mothers in Charge for our Inaugural 5K—Pee Wee’s Run.  KC Mothers in Charge is a group of mothers, grandmothers, aunts and a caring community committed to working to prevent others from experiencing the tragedy of homicide.  Our Mission is to reduce violent crime through prevention, education and intervention, and to guide and support the families of victims.  Our Vision is a KC community safe for all, where families are empowered and supported.

Kicking off National Crime Victims' Rights Week

Pee Wee’s Run is named after KC Mothers in Charge Founder and Executive Director Rosilyn Temple’s son, Antonio “Pee Wee” Thompson, who was found murdered in his apartment in 2011. This 5K event will kick off National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, a week dedicated to promoting victims' rights and honoring crime victims.

Since Pee Wee’s death, Rosilyn has dedicated her life to helping others. KC Mothers in Charge provides support for families who have lost someone due to homicide, including support at the homicide scene, emergency assistance, a 24-hour crisis line, weekly check-in phone calls, monthly support groups, individual, family and group counseling, and lots of love and peer-to-peer support.

Rosilyn responds to nearly every homicide scene in the Kansas City, Missouri area to comfort families at the scene. “I look for the mother first,” Rosilyn says of visiting homicide scenes, “Because I know she needs a hug from me.”

Join KC Mothers in Charge in their 5K in honor of Pee Wee and lives lost to violence in Kansas City. It’s time to come together!

Race Director Cara Gilmore

For her 40th birthday on June 29, 2018, community volunteer Cara Gilmore ran 40 miles across Kansas City, Missouri and raised more than $16,000 for KC Mothers in Charge.  This year, Cara brings her expertise to KC Mothers in Charge serving as Race Director for its Inaugural 5K - Pee Wee's Run.  Cara is a wife and mother of two boys, Owen and Miles. She is an avid runner; she loves the peace it brings and the opportunity to see her city on foot. She moved to Kansas City from St. Louis when she was 12-years-old and has loved it ever since. She has been a Pilates instructor and personal trainer for 13 years. Her work brings much joy as she gets to improve her clients' quality of life by bringing ease of movement and functional exercise into their lives. She is on the leadership team with Moms Demand Action, a group started in 2012 in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. They are a group of moms, dads, aunts, uncles, etc. who advocate for common sense gun laws and safe gun practices. Cara loves the work that KC Mothers in Charge is doing to provide support to the community. She is continually inspired by the women who are a part of KC Mothers in Charge and how they turned their own personal tragedies into a way to help others and improve Kansas City.
