About the event

“Run for Your Cause!-Dual Charity 5k Run/Walk” was created to fund, educate, and raise awareness for two charitable organizations: 1) Jean A. Rocks Mizia Endowed Scholarship at Otterbein University, and 2) DownSyndrome Achieves.

The Jean A. Rocks Mizia Endowed Scholarship will provide a student, enrolled in Otterbein University’s Master of Science in Allied Health program - Healthcare Administration or Exercise Science track, with a financial award based on need. DownSyndrome Achieves is a unique research advocacy group that focuses exclusively on accelerating research and making life healthier for people with Down syndrome (DS). They have also established the first centralized Biobank in the United States that is dedicated to Down syndrome research, located at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH.

The idea for this event was formulated by Dr. Joan Rocks, sister to Jean Rocks Mizia and Chairperson of the Health and Sport Sciences Department at Otterbein University, who wanted to commemorate her sister upon her sudden death from a brain aneurysm and give back to the college community. Jean was a very loving, giving, family and community-oriented individual who would always do for others before thinking of herself. She was also a very successful healthcare administrator, as she served as Vice President for Operations at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.

With the idea of “giving back” to the community and “always doing for others”, DownSyndrome Achieves was the organization chosen by Otterbein students in a Sport Management Event Planning class, to help financially support their mission and vision which is to maximize the health and potential of every individual with Down syndrome by championing the development of critical research capabilities needed to better understand Down syndrome and to accelerate breakthrough discoveries. This also includes preventative care to protect people with Down syndrome from Alzheimer’s disease, childhood leukemia, and autoimmune disease, etc. Their DS Biobank (a collection of DNA, tissue and blood), also provides researchers with the potential to unlock some of the mysteries associated with Down syndrome. This research advocacy organization creates a welcoming community of support for individuals and families living with Down syndrome while aggressively advancing research, legislation, and education.

Over the past five years, Otterbein’s Event Planning class has raised more than $200,000 for a variety of charitable organizations.

In 2018 more than $42,000 was raised for canine cancer patients and their Stereotactic Radiation Therapy treatments via The MedVet Charitable Foundation. A new goal of $35,000 has been set, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Jean A. Rocks Mizia Endowed Scholarship and DownSyndrome Achieves’ DS Biobank research funds.

In addition to the 5k run/walk, the event will also include a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, educational materials, informational presentations, and race-related exhibitors/vendors. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
