RacingThePlanet: Patagonia 2017 is a 7-day, 250-kilometer / 155-mile self-supported footrace which takes place in Bariloche in Argentina. It’s a one –off race that is part of the 4 Deserts Race Series. The course presents a great variety of Patagonian landscape including dry pampas, ancient forests, pristine blue mountain lakes, high plateaus, vast views of valleys, rivers as well as peaks of the Andes Mountain Range including El Tronador, an extinct volcano located along the border between Argentina and Chile; and Ventisquero Negro, the black glacier, one of the eight glaciers formed around the mountain. Competitors will also experience life in local villages with friendly locals, Gauchos, as they traverse the 250 kilometer course. The 4 Deserts Race Series was founded in Hong Kong in February 2002 by American Mary Gadams. A former investment banker and strategist by day, Gadams was a well-known figure in adventure and endurance sport with finishes in numerous marathons, ultramarathons and wilderness competitions around the world. The 4 Deserts Race Series is a collection of four, 250 kilometer, six stage footraces across the world's largest and most forbidding deserts including the Gobi March in China, the Sahara Race in Namibia, the Atacama Crossing in Chile and The Last Desert in Antarctica. Established in 2002, in 2016 the 4 Deserts Race Series will celebrate its 50th race. Competitors are challenged to go beyond the limits of their physical and mental endurance. Racing self-supported in the most inhospitable climates and formidable landscapes, they must carry all their own equipment and food and are only provided with drinking water and a place in a tent each night to rest. The series, named again by TIME magazine in 2010 as one of the world's Top 10 Endurance Competitions, comprises the Atacama Crossing in Chile, the Gobi March in China, the Sahara Race in Egypt and The Last Desert in Antarctica.
