About the event

Run Barbados Marathon Weekend is one of the oldest and most prestigious road racing events in the Caribbean region. The 2017 event will be the 35th edition of Run Barbados. Alan Brookes of Canada Running Series noted, “Barbados is such an awesome destination, I go way back with Run Barbados, I even created the slogan: “Come for the Run; Stay for the Fun!” The festivities kick off with "Signia Fun Mile" at 8 pm on Friday night. On Saturday afternoon the Cave Shepherd Visa Credit Card 5K Run will be followed by the Colombian Emeralds Int'l 10k race. Early Sunday morning the Fotress Half-Marathon and the Cave Shepherd Marathon will set out at 5am taking advantage of cooler temperatures. The AIMS-IAAF certified course routes will take runners through the historic UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bridgetown and along scenic coastal roads. Runners are treated to the sounds of steel pan music on the route and the option of crossing the finish line and running into sea."Run Barbados" has a rich history and many friends in the running community scattered in various corners of the world. From Kenya to USA, Canada, UK and the Caribbean. While RBMW doesn’t offer the large pre-event expo or the generous loot bags associated with mega-marathons it’s the small-time charm, relaxed island life and beauty of the island that attracts repeat visitors such as Goff and so many others. Runner Sarah McLoughlin is another example, she has been visiting Barbados from the UK for an incredible eighteen years to holiday and take part in the annual Run Barbados event. Sarah's fondness for the island and her love of running on the island continues to flourish: " It is the only country I have been to where I just relax as soon as I step off the plane. It is the people that make Barbados so special." Many world-class competitors have run through the streets of Barbados over the years especially in the 10k and the Marathon. John Treacy, Geoff Smith, Alberto Cova, Ron Hill, Hugh Jones, Dylan Wykes, Catherine Ndereba, Jill Hunter and Carey May to name a few. Wykes, the third fastest Canadian Marathoner of all time had these comments after a second place in the half marathon in 2008: I woke up halfway through the race. You have to ask yourself: "Where else in the world would you rather be at this time of year? Dec 1-3, 2017
