My middle son Samaad Frazier was 19 years old when his life was taken away by gun violence on December 31, 2019. Gun violence has increased in our community over the past few years. In 2019 alone there have been numerous shootings and homicides in Somerset, NJ. I’ve decided to turn this violent situation into a positive one by working with community leaders, Pastors, people in the community, the prosecutors office, the local police department and most importantly the youth to unite us as one and fight against gun violence. We are working on programs in the schools and churches, after school and Saturday programs as well as a new youth center that is currently being built.
Since June is Gun Violence Awareness Month and Samaad’s birthday month, I am using this month to have an annual walk to bring the community together and to support the youth who are affected by the violence not only in my community but theirs as well. The donations from this event will be used to help fund the youth programs and to help fund the Passion 4 Youth, Inc. Youth Player Development League which focuses on providing opportunities to our youth through sports play and educational programs.
