We are excited to hold the 1st Annual One Hour Fox Run. The concept is simple. Start your GPS and see how far you can run or walk in one hour!
Most races are a set distance and athletes strive to cover it in as little time as possible. In this race, the time is set, and it’s up to you to see how far you can go! It’s simple and fun! You’ll start at South Mountain Annex with your wave (of 25 runners or fewer), and track your distance over the course of the hour with any GPS tracker you like – Strava, RunGo, MapMyRun, etc. You will run alternating loops of our two, one-mile routes. At the check out table, just show us your distance on your watch or phone, collect your commemorative mug, and bask in the pride of your amazing accomplishment! Or of course, you can participate virtually!
Need some inspiration? The men’s and women’s one-hour world records were both set on Friday, September 4, 2020. Mo Farah is the men’s record holder with 13.254 miles at an average pace of 4:32 per mile. Sifan Hussein holds the women’s record covering 11.763 miles in an hour at an average pace of 5:06 per mile. Will those records hold in New Jersey this April? History will decide!
Registration is $25 ($20 for current SOMA Fox Running Club members). Entry fee is non-refundable. If the event cannot be held on April 17, 2021, we will make every effort to reschedule, or will move to a fully virtual event. Bib transfers are permitted – please email us at [email protected] if you wish to transfer your bib. Please note that the roads will not be closed for this event. Traffic should be very light, but athletes must be mindful of cars.
*25% of profits will be donated to our charity partner, Meeting Essential Needs with Dignity (MEND), bringing fresh, healthy food to our food-insecure neighbors in Essex County.
All runners will take home a commemorative SOMA Fox Mug (logo by local artist Shauna Cagan). Extra mugs are available for purchase for $10.00. We will arrange a time and place for virtual athletes to pick up their mugs.
Please note: There will be no bathroom facilities on or near this course – plan accordingly. For both COVID safety and to minimize the environmental impact of this event, the One Hour Fox Run is a cupless event – please bring your own water bottle. You will be able to re-fill at the aid station which will be located at South Mountain Annex.
Prizes will be gift certificates to Sneaker Factory of $20 for 1st Place and $10 for 2nd Place in the following categories:
(1) Male, (2) Female, (3) Open, (4) Youth Male, (5) Youth Female, (6) Youth Open
To be eligible to win a 1st or 2nd place prize, athletes must compete on the official course in one of the official waves on race day. Virtual participants can win our love, admiration, and social media accolades, but not the gift certificates.
Saturday, April 17, 2021, with Waves at 8:00, 8:15, 8:30, 8:45, and 9:00, 9:15, 9:30 AM + Virtual Only Option
Newstead Neighborhood, South Orange. Starting Line will be at South Mountain Annex (112 Glenview Road, South Orange, NJ, 07079)
When parking your car, please be a good neighbor! If you park on Glenview, only park on the East side of the street (the same side of the street as South Mountain Annex) to allow room for other vehicles. Be mindful of driveways and fire hydrants.
- Waves are limited to 25 runners per wave start time to comply with current NJ Executive Order for outdoor gathering limits.
- Runners are required to wear a face covering/mask during check-in, at the start/end of the race, and at the aid station. All runners will need to carry a face covering/mask with them and should use them anytime you cannot stay 6 feet apart from other people.
- Please come to the start/finish no earlier than 15 minutes before your start time. After the race ends and you sign out, please head back to your car so we can avoid any large gatherings at our race headquarters.
The SOMA Fox Running Club (SFRC) was established in 2021 as a 501c3 non-profit organization in New Jersey, serving South Orange / Maplewood and the surrounding towns. We are a member organization of Road Runners Club of America (RRCA).
Our mission is to promote and extend the joys of running to our community through group workouts, camaraderie, runner-to-runner support, and hosting local races and events. We welcome all levels of runners from absolute beginners to the highly experienced or super speedy. We welcome runners ages 18 and up, all genders, and all backgrounds. We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion through promoting a safe, welcoming, and respectful community. We strive to share the mental and physical benefits of running with everyone who joins, no matter their running goals.
And, we believe in giving back to our community. Because we firmly believe that all people should have access to healthy food to achieve their own goals, our charity partner is Meeting Essential Needs with Dignity (MEND). We pledge to donate a percentage of all funds raised to MEND.
