About the event

The mission of the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS (KIDS) Network is to serve those who are or may be touched by the tragedy of infant death of SIDS by providing supportive services, community education, proffesional training and support associated research.

The KIDS Network’s strategy is to reduce infant mortality by collaborating with statewide initiatives to address prematurity, congenital defects, stillbirth and SIDS. We provide safe sleep education to caregivers and providers through birth-care centers,  public and private clinics and child-care facilities.

Step Up for KIDS 5k and Memorial Walk

Step Up for KIDS is a timed 5K run and memorial walk that benefits the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS Network. The 13th annual event will take place Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Wichita's Old Cowtown Museum, 1865 W. Museum Blvd. Registration includes a T-shirt, lunch, children's fair and admission to Cowtown, a living history museum of 1870s Victorian Wichita.

This scenic riverside 5K course begins and ends at Cowtown.
Ages 12 and up are $25 ($20 if you register by March 18); ages 2 - 11 are $12 ($10 if registered by March 18).

Event Day: Saturday, April 9

8:15 a.m. Memorial walk registration and packet pickup
8:30 a.m. 5K begins
9:15 a.m 5K awards; explore Cowtown and children's fair
10 a.m. Memorial walk
10:30 a.m. Memorial balloon release and team award presented
11 a.m. Lunch provided

A children's fair will run concurrent to the above events.

Individuals and Teams
Step Up for KIDS invites individuals and teams to participate in the 5K and/or the memorial walk. Strollers and wheelchair are permitted. Teams can compete for the Grand Team Award by raising the most money. Participating teams must register under one team name, for example Reed's Runners.

Memorial Walk
For the memorial walk, participants are encouraged to walk around the town square in memory of all babies who have died too soon. Door prizes will be given away during the memorial walk. All registered participants (5K and walk) are eligible to win. You must be present to win.

Packets
Pre-registered participants may pick up their packets at the KIDS office, 1148 S. Hillside, Suite 10, between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, April 8. 5K timing chips will be distributed with packets. Packets also will be available at check-in on the event day.

Awards
5K: Both men and women will be awarded for top three overall finishers and top three finishers in each age group. Oz Endurance will time the event.
Team: The Grand Team Award will to to the team that has raised the most money.
Door prizes will be given away during the memorial walk. All registered participants are eligible, but you must be present to win. Reminder: Incomplete registration information, including the liability waiver, will exclude a participant from awards.

Children's Fair
During the event children can participate in games and activities at the children's fair.

Memorial Balloon Release
Everyone is invited to participate in the memorial balloon release in memory of all babies that have died too soon. The balloon release is scheduled immediately following the memory walk. If you want your child's name to be read during the memorial balloon release, please stop by the DJ tent/table and add your child's name to the list.

Please no pets, alcoholic beverages or glass containers.
