This is the largest marathon in the world with more than 50,000 finishers in 2014. Despite the huge number of participants and as for the Boston Marathon, runners still have to qualify to be able to take part. You can find more information about the New York City Marathon qualification process on this official page.
What makes the race really special is the enthusiastic crowd that sheers the runners during the whole course.
The race starts on Staten Island by running over the Verrazano Bridge before touring the remaining boroughs of the city (Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan). It then finishes in Central Park.
