Tri Sigma's 5K For Children's Therapeutic Play

Sigma Sigma Sigma's 5K for Children's Therapeutic Play will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the South Mountain Recreation Complex's Clipper Pavilion (between the playground the paddle boats) in West Orange, NJ (rain or shine). Please join the Zeta Kappa Chapter for the second annual 5k For Children's Therapeutic Play and help support the Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation!

This 5k race will be held on a flat, beginner-friendly scenic course loop on the beautiful West Orange Reservoir. This is a family friendly event and each entry into the 5k also earns a pass to the Turtle Back Zoo, for the day of the event. Come for the race and stay for a fun-filled day at the park!

The Foundation focuses on helping seriously ill children by funding therapeutic play, which helps hospitalized children to accept and understand their diseases and treatments. It also aids in decreasing anxiety and increases coping through support and education. Every year, the Foundation awards local grants to programs nominated by alumnae and collegiate chapters. The Foundation also funds major national fellowships at the Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas and North Carolina Children's Hospital at UNC-Chapel Hill.

What is "Therapeutic Play"?

Therapeutic play: Because the natural progression of a child's physical, emotional and intellectual development occurs through play, chronically ill children who are frequently hospitalized need to have the opportunity for play to occur in the hospital setting. Through therapeutic play, a child's illness will not halt his/her development. Therapeutic play also helps hospitalized children to accept and understand their diseases and treatments, to decrease stress and anxiety, and to increase coping through developmentally appropriate support and education.
