Akron, OH (July 16, 2013) – The Akron Marathon announces seasoned runner, race organizer and Akron Marathon participant Brian Polen as its new race director. In this role, Polen is responsible for managing the planning, organizing and staging of the Akron Marathon events.
“With his wealth of experience and connections to the running community, Brian is a great addition to the Akron Marathon staff,” said Anne Bitong, Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation president/executive director.
Polen is the owner of specialty running store Vertical Runner of Wooster, Ohio, and has served as race director for a number of events through the store. He has also served on planning committees for many local and regional races.
Polen holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from The University of Akron and has ten years’ experience managing projects and personnel in his role as the manager of quality and application engineering at ixetic USA, Inc.
Polen succeeds Jim Barnett, who served as race director from the inception of the Akron Marathon in 2003 through its 10th-year anniversary in 2012. Barnett retired and joined the Board of Trustees at the end of 2012.
“Brian will help the Akron Marathon continue to advance and evolve as the world-class event that it is,” Barnett said. “He adds enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport and leadership in the community, which are important qualities in a race director and qualities that will help enhance our great race over the years.”
