In Sharing the Day, the 2013 Carmel Marathon Weekend adds a Touch of Pink for Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

21 Dec, 2012 (Fri)

Event adds donation options in support of the Komen Central Indiana Affiliate

CARMEL, Ind. (Dec. 19, 2012) – With the increasing popularity of run/walk events, most weekends offer participants a variety of race events to choose from. Often runners want to support multiple events and their causes but can only choose one because of a date conflict. Thanks to a new, unique collaboration, participants eyeing the third weekend of April can participate in one event and support two. The Carmel Marathon Weekend and Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Central Indiana Affiliate have joined forces to allow runners the opportunity to join in the fight against breast cancer.

The partnership developed following feedback from runners who wanted to participate in both the Komen Race for the Cure® and the Carmel Marathon Weekend, each scheduled for April 20, 2013. The Race for the Cure offers a 5K run and one-mile walk in Indianapolis with many participating with family members or on a team. The Carmel Marathon Weekend provides a variety of competitive race distances including a 26.2-mile marathon, 13.1-mile half marathon, marathon relay and 8K (4.8 mile).

When registering for any event for the Carmel Marathon Weekend, participants will have the option to donate an additional amount toward Komen Central Indiana and in return, receive a special Carmel Marathon pink race bib and/or Carmel Marathon pink race tech shirt. Carmel Road Racing Group, event management group for the Carmel Marathon Weekend, will enhance all participants’ donations with an added contribution to Komen Central Indiana.

“We’re really excited about being able to give our runners and walkers the chance to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Komen Central Indiana Affiliate,” said Todd Oliver, president of Carmel Road Racing Group and race director for the Carmel Marathon Weekend. “Seeing all the pink bibs and shirts on our participants throughout the day will be a visible reminder of the positive impact our participants have made on important health care programs right here in Central Indiana.”

Donations at any amount will help low-income Hoosier women receive breast health services they need but can’t afford, as well as fund global research on the causes, improved treatments and cures for breast cancer. A donation of $50 can help cover the cost of a clinical breast exam, while $100 can help cover the cost of a mammogram.

“We are grateful to the Carmel Marathon for creating this innovative way for participants to have many more options to run while also supporting the fight against breast cancer,” said Dana Curish, executive director of Komen Central Indiana. “Each year, more and more women need our help to fund lifesaving early screening and detection services and this partnership gives us a new and exciting way to help them. Hoosier women’s lives will be saved with the dollars generated as the Carmel Marathon and Susan G. Komen join forces.”

In addition to the pink bib and shirt options, runners and walkers will also be able to support the Central Indiana Race for the Cure® by joining the Carmel Marathon Weekend’s affiliate race team. Members of this group will support the local Race for the Cure event from afar, running or walking in Carmel on April 20 while fundraising for Komen Central Indiana. Team members will also receive a t-shirt for the 2013 Central Indiana Race for the Cure. To learn more and join the team, click here.
