The 5,000 and 10,000m Olympic champion is the first British runner to win the race in Newcastle since Steve Kenyon in 1985. The finished the race in 1:00:00, just in front of his training partner Mike Kigen (1:00:00). Marathon Olympic Champion Steven Kiprotich took the third place in 01:01:35.
Last year Mo had finished second behind Kenenisa Bekele.
In the women’s race, Mary Keitany, who had won the 2012 London Marathon topped the podium in 01:05:39. This time equals the course record established by Paula Radcliffe. Gemma Steel finished second in 01:08:13 and Marathon Olympic Champion Tiki Gelana was third in 01:08:45.
Next year, the race will take place on September 13th.
