QUANTICO, VA (Jan. 22, 2013) – Registration opens online at noon tomorrow, Jan. 23 for “the greatest half marathon in history” as the Marine Corps Historic Half, the all new Historic 10K and Semper Fred 5K will welcome 10,000 runners on Sunday, May 19. Held in the historic City of Fredericksburg, VA, just 50 minutes between Richmond and Washington, D.C., Historic Half runners will journey along the magnificent colonial streets and neighborhoods that were home to America’s forefathers including Presidents George Washington and James Monroe. Online registration for the Historic Half events will open to the public at www.marinemarathon.com.
As runners eagerly register, they will be able to choose from three distance events, the 13.1 mile Marine Corps Historic Half, the inaugural 6.2 mile Historic 10K or the 3.1 mile Semper Fred 5K. The new Historic 10K replaces the relay event held in previous years, while the Semper Fred 5K embarks on a new course this year.
“The popularity of the Marine Corps Historic Half has made it one of the most celebrated half marathons on the East Coast, and now with even more distances available, anyone from the seasoned competitor to the novice runner, will want to join in on the fun of Historic Half Weekend,” says Rick Nealis, Marine Corps Marathon Director.
Offering entertainment along every mile, the Historic Half course begins with spectacular pageantry in Fredericksburg’s Central Park shopping district and continues through charming neighborhoods and historic downtown with impressive landmarks and splendid scenery all along the way. Echoing the Marine Corps mission to “take the hill” in battle, the Historic Half includes the impressive challenge of running Hospital Hill, located on the Mary Washington Healthcare campus.
The Historic 10K begins in the heart of Fredericksburg, at Maury Street and Fall Hill Avenue, and runs along much of the same historic route as the half marathon, including the challenge of Hospital Hill. Runners will complete the Historic 10K in Central Park, finishing adjacent to the Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center. The new Semper Fred 5K course begins on Route 1, and for the first time, the event will test runners’ mettle on Hospital Hill, before crossing the same finish as Historic Half and 10K runners.
Registration for the Historic Half is $75 with the event open to ages 10 and up. The new Historic 10K for ages eight and up is $45, while the Semper Fred 5K is $35 for runners of all ages. Free shuttle services will be offered for Historic Half participants and spectators with services conveniently located near the Historic Half start line and Finish Festival in Central Park. The two-day Healthy Lifestyle Expo will be held prior to the Historic Half on May 17-18 at the Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center.
