Results: Burka, Desisa pick up wins, Wacera sets women's U.S. record in Texas

Marathon results

Last year’s runner-up Gebo Burka (2:10:54) cut close to three minutes from his 2015 time to win the Chevron Houston Marathon in east Texas.
Nearly 7,800 participants completed the course lined with many times than in spectators.
Girmay Gebru secured second with a time of 2:11:05.
In third was last year’s winner Birhanu Gedefa (2:11:53) finishing just ahead of Yitayal Atanfu (1:12:09).


For the women, it was Biruktayit Degefa (2:26:07) taking the top spot, despite coming in almost three minutes slower than her third-place finish last year.
Lisa Weightman earned runner-up honors with a time of 2:27:35.
Sechale Dalasa (2:28:43) rounded out the top three.
She finished fourth a year ago.

Half Marathon results

In a tight race at the top, Lelisa Desisa (1:00:37) narrowly defeated Mosinet Geremew (1:00:45) to win the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.
The main event saw more than 11,000 runners pass through.
Samsom Gebreyohannes Gezahai (1:01:28) finished a second ahead of Luke Puskedra (1:01:29) for second.
For the women, it was Mary Wacera (1:06:29) running the fastest half marathon ever inside the U.S.
Setting the course record by nearly two minutes, her mark of 1:06:29 was good for ninth fastest in women’s history.
The previoes U.S. record was 1:07:11 set by Kim Smith in 2011.
Cynthia Limo finished an extremely close second at 1:06:41.
Last year’s world champion Mare Dibaba (1:07:44) managed to hold off Ruti Aga (1:08:07) for third.
