Kenneth Mungara pulled away late, setting a course record with a time of 2:08:41 in the 37th running of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in Queensland, Australia.
Defending champion a previous record-holder Silah Limo bested Evans Ruto by a second, to finish second with a time of 2:08:54.
In the women’s race, Risa Takenaka finished comfortably ahead of the field with a time of 2:28:25. Keiko Nogami, the only other runner to finish under two hours and thirty minutes, crossed the finish line at 2:29:32 to take second. Manami Kamitanida’s time of 2:33:43 was more than three minutes ahead of the fourth place finisher.
Takehiro Deki finished less than a minute off the course record with a time of 1:02:11.
Liam Adams (1:03:29) and Ben Moreau (1:04:32) were the only other participants to come in under an hour and five minutes.
In the women’s race Eloise Wellings edged Sara Hall for first with a time of 1:10:10. Hall (1:10:49) held off Cassie Fien who finished third at 1:11:28.
