San Diego, CA – February 24, 2011 – In its 14th year, the Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & ½ Marathon To Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ® is returning better than ever. The event, which takes place Sunday, June 5th, will feature some key course adjustments to create the ultimate running experience in sunny San Diego for more than 30,000 expected participants.

The race began in 1998 as the first event in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Series and grew considerably with the addition of a half-marathon in 2010. The 2011 event will start in beautiful Balboa Park, running through downtown San Diego, past PETCO Park, with a bayfront finish at Rose Marie Starns South Shores Park and SeaWorld.

The most obvious change to runners in 2011 will be the separation of race courses along the majority of Highway 163, with half-marathoners running in the northbound lanes and full-marathoners in the southbound lanes. The move will result in closures on both sides of Highway 163, and will help to alleviate crowding while enhancing the overall runner experience.

Marathon runners will also experience a shorter loop on Fiesta Island, making up those miles on Morena Boulevard north of Clairemont Drive, an area previously not included in the course. Event Director Kari Logan says the move was designed to improve the runner experience in the final miles of the marathon course.

“We try to emphasize the spectator-heavy areas in that final stretch as much as possible and keep our runners motivated and entertained,” said Logan. “We are absolutely committed to making sure every participant has a great experience and we are always working to make those adjustments and improve every year.”

More information, including a course map and full road closure grid, is available online at competitor.com

Participant parking will also return to its original location at the Airport Authority lot at Pacific Highway and Washington Street. This is conveniently located between the start and finish, and will allow for direct shuttle routes for participants on race day.

The finish line festival area is getting an upgrade by paving SeaWorld’s east lot, creating a more comfortable and unified space for runners to relax and celebrate with friends and family as they enjoy the headliner concert.

The Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & ½ Marathon is scheduled to start at 6:15am on Sunday, June 5th. Runners can get prepared for race day at the Health & Fitness Expo presented by Power Balance on Friday, June 3rd and Saturday, June 4th. The expo is free and open to the public and takes place at the San Diego Convention Center. A runner’s ultimate resource, the Expo brings together nearly 100 exhibitors offering the best in gear, nutrition, and training along with legendary running experts and athletes hosting interactive clinics.

Kids in grades K-7 can run a modified marathon of their own, running their last mile at ING KiDS ROCK San Diego on Saturday, June 4th. The cumulative marathon training program for kids aims to tackle childhood obesity by demonstrating that physical activity can be fun and instilling a lifetime love of fitness.
