While theoretically we are still in summer until the 21st, September marks the beginning of the Fall running season.
September is the second largest month of the year in terms of races organized. During the 4 week-ends, 493 events will be organized around the world. The heaviest week will be the second one (September 11th) with no less than 154 events. After two hot months of training, are you ready for new adventures?
In this article, I want to present to you a few events. Some you may already know, some you might discover.
Let’s start with the marathons. 180 marathons are held in September. Here is a selection of 6 races worth running.
USA – Hawaii – Sunday September 5th at 06:00
The course is quite challenging, with many hills to climb. But it rewards the runners with gorgeous scenery on the volcanic peaks and the tropical beaches. The Kauai island has ranked #1 among Hawaiian Islands in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2010 readers’ survey.
Norway – Sunday September 6th at 11:00
Trondheim Marathon is Norway’s oldest marathon. It started in 1969. The course is relatively flat and runs for the most part along the Nidlev river, giving a great view on the small wooden houses. A Half marathon is also organized.
France – Saturday September 11th at 09:30
This is no ordinary marathon. The race runs through the famous Médoc vineyards in Pauillac near Bordeaux. Most of the runners wear a disguise and many refreshment stands offer wine testing from the nearby Chateaux and gourmet food. This is why the organizers claim that their marathon is the longest marathon in the world. This year, the theme for the race is “Comics Heros”. Get your disguise ready! More info…
Mexico – Sunday September 12th
The course is flat and takes the runners through the most beautiful parts of the city. The race was previously run on the last week-end of september. This year it will be on September 12th. A half marathon is also organized. It is a good opportunity to discover the city of Mexico.
USA – Alaska – Sunday September 18th at 08:00
This race is a small trail marathon ran in Fairbanks. The course is beautiful and challenging. Past runners have fond memories of climbing the Ester Dome. A 50K ultra marathon is also organized during the week-end.
Germany – Sunday September 26th at 09:00
The marathon where the world record has been established ! The course is flat and fast, a good opportunity to establish a new PB. You can count on a huge crowd of berliners to cheer you up. With about 40K runners, Berlin is one of the largest marathons in the world and is a member of the World Marathon Majors. More info…

Greece – Sunday September 24th at 07:00
The 246 km long Spartathlon route aims to follow the footsteps of Pheidippides, an Athenian messenger sent to Sparta in 490 BC to seek help against the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. This may be a good way to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of the Battle.
The race is extremely challenging and full of history. More info…
USA – Virginia – Saturday September 18th at 07:00
This race is run on the trails the Douthat State ParK in Virginia. The ultra race follows the Odyssey Off-Road Iron –distance Triathlon loop which is run 3 times.
A marathon, half marathon and 5 Mile are also featured. More info…
334 half marathons are organized in September. Running a half in September is a good way to prepare a full marathon in October.

France – Saturday September 4th at 09:00
The half Marathon will celebrate this year its 25th anniversary. The race is organized during the famous “Braderie de lille”, a yearly popular flea market held on the streets of Lille during the first week-end of September. A Nice opportunity to indulge yourself with the traditional “moules-frites”(Mussels & Fries). More info…
United Kingdom – Sunday September 5th at 09:00
Run the Scottish way with 7000 fellow runners in the streets of Glasgow. The route will take you past some of the city’s most famous attractions. It starts and finishes in the city’s oldest park.
A 10k race in ran the same day.
USA – Idaho – Sunday September 19th at 08:45
The half marathon runs on the shores of the gorgeous Lake Pend Orielle in Idaho. It starts and finishes on Sandpoint’s City Beach. Most of the route is run on paved surfaces. A 10K and a 5K are also organized. More info….
Italy – Sunday September 26th at 09:30
The 11th edition fo the Turin Half Marathon will start from the Medieval village in the magnificent Parco del Valentino and finishes at the 45° NORTH Entertainment Center in Moncalieri. The race is a nice warm-up for the City’s marathon: Turin Marathon organized on November 14th. More info…
USA – Tennessee – Saturday September 25th at 7:00
This race is organized by the Women’s Running Magazine. The magazine launched its first race last year in St. Petersburg,FL and in 2010 two new races are added Nashville and Scottsdale, AZ. The route is an out and back that starts at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum. Although the race targets mainly women, male runners are welcome to join. More info…
