§staticmap(9960,5,450,250)Hello, on October 30 2011, you’ll be organizing the Shawnigan Kinsol Half Marathon. Can you tell us where it is located?
The Shawnigan-Kinsol Half Marathon will start at Shawnigan Lake School 1975 Renfrew Road, Shawnigan Lake, and tour country roads around Shawnigan Lake, the Trans Canada Trail, across the newly restored Kinsol Trestle then back to Shawnigan Lake School.
How old is the race and why was it created in the first place?
This race has a long history; beginning 36 years ago. Not sure why it was created; except that the CeeVACs Roadrunners have been an integral part of the race in its many forms.
What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it?
The route is BRAND NEW as this is the first opportunity to cross the Kinsol Trestle in over 30 years. Our route will have everything in it; undulating country roads, Trans Canada Trail and 1 large (Kinsol) and 1 small (Magee) bridge.
Runners and walkers will love this new route. Also, Shawnigan Lake School and its beautiful grounds are the perfect place to relax after the event.
How many runners do you expect on Sunday morning? What type of runners do you plan to attract?
We haven’t been able to properly advertise the race due to uncertainty about the timing of the Kinsol Trestle opening. Next year will see more runners we are certain. This year; we should see 200 or more eager participants; ranging from the elite to the new halfers.
Do you organize other races during the Week-End? If so, on what distances?
We hope to have a short distance for tots. Stay tuned on our website for details.
At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect?
One can expect any weather. We typically have the PERFECT conditions ie clear and cool.
Have you planned festivities around the half marathon?
Because we are so close to Halloween, we make the event itself a lot of fun with costumes and scary race marshals. Most folks need to get home right away to set up for their own festivities.
The race finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Shawnigan Lake before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing?
Great question. Folks can choose from a walk around the beautifully groomed gardens of Shawnigan Lake School, stroll along Shawnigan Lake, visit one of several wineries, dine at Staples Restaurant in Shawnigan Village or grab a coffee in a Village coffee shop.
In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of ahotu Marathons to make them register for the Shawnigan Kinsol Half Marathon?
The Shawnigan-Kinsol Half Marathon 2011 is history in the making; showcasing a historic railway trestle that was abandoned in 1980 and restored in 2011.
Interview with Kelly Schellenberg, CeeVACs Roadrunners and race director for the Shawnigan area Half Marathon. She is working with a group of miracle workers who will marshal, feed, time and park the athletes who will join them for this inaugural run over the Kinsol Trestle.
