The NYC Marathon started on the Verazzano Bridge under harsh conditions. Cloudy skies, winds and cold temperature were waiting with the runners on the start line. More than 50,000 runners were about take part in the largest marathon on the planet.
At the end of the 26.2 km course, which visited the 5 boroughs of the Big Apple, Kenyan Wilson Kipsang was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 2:10:59. The runner who held the world record on the distance until last Berlin Marathon wins his third World Marathon Major race in 13 month. He had won Berlin’s marathon last year, setting a new World record and had triumphed in London last spring.
His time is the slowest winning time since 1995.
Kipsang finishes before two Ethiopian runners Lelisa Desisa (02:11:06) and Gebre Gebremariam (02:12:13). American Mebrahtom Keflizighi who had won last Boston Marathon took the 4th place.
Geoffrey Mutai didn’t manage to get a third consecutive win in New York (2011,2013) and finished 6th.
In the women’s race title went to Mary Keitany also from Kenya with a time of 2:25:07. She finishes 3 seconds ahead of her fellow countrywoman Jemima Sumgong (02:25:10). Portugal’s Sara Moreira took the third place in 02:26:00. Desiree Linden, the first American runners finished in 02:28:11 and took the 5th place.
Next year, the TCS New York Marathon will take place on November 1st.
