This is the third time Italia’s runner Ivan Cudin wins the race. Last year, he finished fourth and won two consecutive years in 2010 and 2011.
Szilvia Lubics from Hungary is the first women to cross the finish line with a time of 26:53:40. This time ranks her in the top 9 overall!
Spartathlon is considered one of the most difficult races in the world. The 245 km route goes from Acropolis in Athens where the race started on Friday to the city of Sparta. The participants run on roads, cross vineyards and olive groves, and climb to the top of Mount Parthenio (1,200 m ascent).
The route follows the one Pheidippides should have taken in 490 BC when he was sent to Sparta to ask for reinforcements before the Battle of Marathon.
