About the event

Tromsø, Norway is known for its wild and lively nightlife, as well as its stunning snow-capped peaks and amazing scenery. It is the administrative centre of Troms county, and is home to a respected university, the historic Mack Brewery, and more pubs per capita than any other Norwegian city. Plus, there are plenty of cultural bashes, buskers, and an animated street scene. But the real star of the show is the Polar Night Halfmarathon! This annual half marathon running competition has been taking place every year since 2004, in the beginning of January, during the Polar Night-period, when the sun does not rise above the horizon. It is renowned for its torch-lit route, offering participants the chance of running underneath the aurora borealis. You can choose between 42km (new since 2021), 21km, 10km and 5km; however, the marathon isn't for beginners, as you have to prove that you have done the distance in less than four hours over the last two years to sign up. So if you're looking for a wild and unique challenge for your bucket list, Polar Night Halfmarathon is the place to be!

This was my first half-marathon ever. And my first trip to the Arctic region. And what an experience to run in the Polar Night! Check out my blog with photos for a full review at https://beyondthegaybourhood.com/the-best-half-marathon-in-the-world/(opens in a new tab)

Well organised with place to keep your belongings, and providing of life blanket. I was a bit disappointed by the route as you expect to run a bit out of town to experience the wild. This is only for the marathon route. I would have preferred to had a point to point race with a shuttle and not run back and fourth, to be able to see more. The whole experience is overall great due to the conditions (weather, temperatures, night).

Super organisiert, bereits im Vorfeld. Ausgabe der Startunterlagen übersichtlich und schnell. Warm-up spaßig

Schnelle und flach verlaufende Strecke. Am Kreisverkehr beim Hotel moxy hätte es etwas mehr Order benötigt.

This is a beautiful marathon, the scenery is to die for! The support along the route is limited, so be prepared for this. The only reason I did not give it 5* was that I thought the support at the end could have been a bit better. It was snowing heavily, and it was a long walk when you’re already exhausted and cold to baggage collection and warm clothing. I felt there was poor signage and direction too. Definitely a race to consider but perhaps have a support crew with you at the end.

Terrible weather but on the beginning of January what I did expect. Great organization. Absolutely worth to experience.
