About the event

Hello Riders,

Thank you for registering at the 2023 Pescadero Coastal Classic Road Race and your dontation to South Coast Children Services where $5 from your entry goes to this charity to support local kids. I have worked hard over the last months to try bring you a great racing experience. It is a great venue and a fantastic course, we have some great prizes for the winners.

The weather is looking great for Saturday, but as we are very close to the coast, the morning may be a little chilly and gloomy looking, but it should clear up by late morning.

Getting There;

Pescadero is fairly easy to find, just a mile or two off Hwy 1 about halfway in between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. The start is at the Pescadero High School

 https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pescadero+High+School/@37.2498824,-122.365314,16.27z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x25f16aca6fb33eb9!8m2!3d37.2476056!4d-122.3646243?hl=en&authuser=0

There is plenty of parking although the parking lot may be full if your race starts later. Please follow directions of our parking marshals who will direct you. Either way it is a short walk or ride to the registration area at the school.  Be sure to have a screenshot of your race license ready at sign in, there is next to no network coverage at the school.

The Course;

New Course this Year!, Please familiarize yourself with it. From the High School there will be a neutral roll out through the one way traffic control on Highway 1), left on Pescadero Creek Rd (here you enter the course lap), right on Highway 1 and through the Traffic Light (race officially starts just past the end of the one way construction that will be managed by CHP and Bay Area Traffic Solutions), right on Hwy 84 (there is a traffic light here as well at mile 5.2 from Highway 1 that will be managed to let the race go through by PA C&C), right on Pescadero Creek Rd, past the hilltop finish and back to Pescadero. There will be a centerline rule in place. Pavement on the course is good, although there can be some rough patches on HIGHWAY 84 along the shoulder at about mile 4-7 from Highway 1 (WATCH OUT and CALL THINGS OUT TO YOUR FELLOW RACERS!) . NOTE: Pescadero Creek Rd after the finish is steep with a couple of fast tight turns, please use caution and ride within your limits. On Hwy 84 there is some gaps in the road shoulder, please be alert here and try to avoid them by not riding in the shoulder, but be aware of traffic wanting to pass the field, 84 can be busy. The course is open to ALL TRAFFIC except Highway 1 during the first lap.

Finishline; is at the top of Haskins Hill, it is approximately 2.5km from the base of the climb to the finish. Once you finish please do not hang around at the finish area, please proceed down back to Pescadero (about 20mins), if you need water or have a result despute you may do so at the finish but make it quick and then be on your way.

Feedzone; The feedzone is located just as you turn onto Pescadero Creek Rd on the slight uphill. Neutral feed will be at the beginning of the feedzone. Here you can take water or electrolyte mix. The feedzone is aprox. 4km from the finish. If you have a feeder to support you, there is parking on Redwood Dr, they are to stand after the neutral feed and are not to proceed to the finish area, you will be eliminated if they do so. They are to travel along Hwy 84 and Hwy 1 back to the school. Please disgard your rubbish into the feedzone.

Clothing Drop; because it may be chilly in the morning you may think about starting with a vest and armwarmers. You can drop these off at two locations, 1) at the beginning of the feedzone, 2) as you pass Butano Cutoff Rd, these locations will be signed. Clothing will be collected and bought back to the school. Please have your name on your clothing.

Follow Cars: We will have follow cars on the course. If you put wheels in it is more so that you have a wheel to ride back on, it will be wheels in wheels out, please place your bib number or name on your wheels so they are easily identifieable. The follow car may or may not be behind you at the time you flat, it is not there to pace you back into the race, this is not pro race. There will also be a broom wagon following Cat 5 men. It is HIGHLY recommended to take a spare tube.

Prizes (Pizza) & Podiums; Please show for podium if you place. We have cash prizes as well as giftcards and merchandise from our sponsors Terun Pizza and Eliel Cycling. Additionally, all participants may use the code AltoVeloPescadero20 for 20% off any order from Eliel! Zwift prizes for the women’s race (Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift merchandise plus a 1 year Zwift subscription).

Rules; The imporant stuff. As I said, centerline rule is in place, officials will eliminate you for crossing it. Do not throw your rubbish on the roadside, keep it in your pockets until the feedzone or you're finished. Please be respectful to locals, some are sensitive about the race, do not abuse or swear at anyone for any reason, if there is an issue inform me after the race so I can adress it. Please stay to the right of the road, especially when climbing Haskins in a small group or on your own, and also on the way back to the school after you finish, do not take up the whole road chit chatting, be aware of traffic and ride single file to allow them to pass. There will be a roaming CHP.

Again, thanks for coming and have a great race.

Hungry afterward? Support the local businesses - the gas station does excellent tacos, and the Arcangeli Grocery store does great sandwiches.

Thanks, and have a great race!
