YOU’RE INVITED TO A BEAUTIFUL ME’S "WEDDING" – A FUNdraising Themed Run/Walk!
WHO: All runners and walkers (i.e., “wedding guests”) who want to have a great time! You don’t have to be a bride or someone who is getting married. Men and anyone interested in participating are welcome! Ideally, runners will dress-up as brides, grooms, bridesmaids, groomsmen, priests, churches, cakes, etc. Please use your imagination and have a great time coming up with your own unique wedding-inspired attire to wear! Supportive spectators and cheerleaders are welcome and appreciated along the route! They may also partake in the indoor festivities for a small fee, as “jilted lovers.” Jilted lovers pay $10 to access the exclusive non-runner observation deck, giving them the best view of their friends and family at the start of the race. Canadian runners/walkers welcome!!!
For those looking for a good place to get a dress, the A Beautiful Me’s The Closet in downtown Port Huron, 235 Huron Avenue, Port Huron, Michigan 48060, will have gently used dresses and accessories that you can choose from for a small donation!
WHAT: A timed 5K fun run and 2 mile fun walk. T-shirts are guaranteed to those registered by end of day on Thursday, July 18 and socks (for those Runaway Brides’ cold feet!) will be given at the finish line to the first 200. Prizes awarded for best dressed bride, couple and wedding party, as well as for the fastest runners.
MASSAGES: Complimentary pre- and post-race stretching and massage will be provided by volunteer massage therapists from the Lakewood School of Therapeutic Massage.
“WEDDING RECEPTION”: A “wedding reception” will follow the run/walk at the Blue Water Convention Center, 800 Harker Street, Port Huron, Michigan 48060. Come join us for food, beverages (including a cash bar), photos, raffles of amazing baskets, music, and a great post-race celebration with the other participants (or, um, “wedding guests”)!!! Have some celebratory mimosas and bloody mary’s after your run/walk! Make sure to bring your CASH to take advantage of all of the goodies for raffle/sale and the cash bar!!! We will be raffling off some amazing baskets created by Woman’s Life chapters and others!!!
WHERE: Same day registration will be held within the Blue Water Convention Center, 800 Harker Street, Port Huron, Michigan 48060. Participants should report to the Blue Water Convention Center to explore the vendors and meet the other runners before the race. The race itself will begin and end in the parking lot directly across from the Convention Center (i.e., the lot closest to the river along the Thomas Edison Parkway, right next to the bronze statue of Thomas Edison). Don’t forget to bring your Runaway Bride informational postcard if you have one! Place your name on the card, and then bring it to the Blue Water Convention Center to be entered into a raffle drawing!
COURSE ROUTE: Participants will run/walk along the Thomas Edison Parkway, a boardwalk along the beautiful St. Clair River; up through Pine Grove Park; into the northernmost part of downtown Port Huron; and back along the St. Clair River. Participants will have the opportunity to see massive, sea-going freighters, as well as the stunning blue water for which this area is famous. Port Huron shares the St. Clair River with its neighbor to the EAST, Ontario, Canada (participants will see Sarnia/Petrolia, Ontario as they make their way along the River). Participants will pass the Thomas Edison Depot Museum, the Huron Lightship, a boulder marking the boyhood home of Thomas Edison, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock, the St. Clair County Civil War Memorial, and several beautiful, historic homes. Runners will also have the chance to run through the the 9-1-1 First Responder Memorial and Flag Plaza, and under the Blue Water Bridges (please note, the route for walkers is shorter, so walkers will not pass directly under the bridge, although they will be able to view the bridges as they walk toward the finish). The course has some gentle uphill sections, as well as one easy to moderate downhill section. The course is open, so the roads will not be closed to traffic. However, runners/walkers will mainly be on sidewalks, and there will be course marshalls along the route and at intersections to help guide and protect the participants. Runners/walkers should be mindful of their surroundings and their own safety as they participate in the event. EMS will be on scene in Pine Grove Park for any emergencies that may arise. There will be one water station on the route at the 1 mile marker.
RESTROOMS: Bathrooms are available inside the Blue Water Convention Center. Porta-Pottys are available behind the baseball bleachers in Pine Grove Park, as well as at the bottom of the diagonal walkway that descends from the upper sidewalk in the Park down to the Thomas Edison Boardwalk.
PARKING INFORMATION: Free parking is available to participants, guests, and spectators, in the lots behind the Blue Water Convention Center/Freighters/Hilton DoubleTree, as well as in the lots along the Thomas Edison Parkway (except for the lot nearest to the Thomas Edison statue, which is the holding area and start/finish line for the runners).
