As a new Ekiden of Santa Fe to Buffalo Thunder Half ‘N’ Marathon Relay. Ekiden is a running race with Japanese roots and has a great tradition in Japan. The original concept was intended as a communication and transport system. Ekiden is a combination of two words in Japanese. Eki means “place” and Den stands for “delivery”. Important documents and messages were passed on to each other in this way by different runners. The pile of documents is symbolized in modern Ekiden by a Sash; the ‘Tasuki’, which is passed on to the next runner. The Ekiden is a relay, where a team of six runners complete together the magical marathon distance of 42.195 km. Each team member runs his own distance divided over the following distances 5km-10km-5km-10km-5km-7.2 km. The hand over to the next runner is done by passing on the Tasuki, the sash will hang from the shoulder, diagonally across the chest, to the hip.
The result is the total accumulated time of the six runners; the marathon time. It is therefore important that all six runners do their best to achieve the fastest possible team performance.
