As Upshur County Trails is a new course for WVMBA this year, we wanted to give you a few notes.

This is a course that will reward a pre-ride. It's not technical in terms of major rock gardens, but it's tight and twisty, with steep uphill switchbacks, quick turns, and some options to choose to ride either a feature or a B-line, where you'll want to know what's what in advance. You will hear us say in the racer's meeting: if you haven't ridden an orange-X-marked feature before, don't attempt it on race day! These are full-commit, relatively high consequence features. For everyone's safety, take the B-line if you didn't get a chance to pre-ride.

Approximately 90% of this course is hand-built singletrack. Passing *will* be a part of your race; please be prepared to talk to your fellow racers and execute safe passes.

All categories share a prologue of about a mile and a half, followed by a main lap that racers will do one, two or three times. Distances and climbing are as follows:

Novice/Beginner: 7 miles, 910 feetCat 2/Ebike: 12.5 miles, 1640 feet Pro/Cat 1: 17.8 miles, 2370 feet

There aren't many particularly sustained climbs, but lots of short punchy ones. There are some rocks and roots, and rollers and table tops and small jumps. All challenging features have a ride-around line (marked in blue, as opposed to the orange technical features). There's a lot of fun to be had! And a few trails not included in this race course, so we hope you'll come back to check out these trails in their entirety.

Upshur County Trails is offering a guided pre-ride on June 1. Our group rides every Wednesday night at 6pm in *almost* all weather--we'll be choosing a Wednesday to post as another guided preride opportunity, but any Wednesday would be a fine time to visit. If these dates don't work for you, reach out to [email protected] or [email protected] and we'll get you set up with somebody to show you around. Look forward to seeing you on the trails!

Other course information, when available, can be found on the WVMBA website under the “Upshur County Uprising" page. There are three distances to choose from depending on your skill and fitness level.
